It was notable for taunts and boasts about rapping, and socio-political commentary, both delivered in an aggressive, self-assertive style. In image as in song its artists projected a tough, cool, street b-boy attitude. These elements contrasted sharply with the funk and disco influenced outfits, novelty hits, live bands, synthesizers and party rhymes of artists prevalent prior to 1984 (although this characterization does not include all, or most artists prior to 1984). New school artists made shorter songs that could more easily gain radio play, and more cohesive LPs than their old school counterparts. By 1986 their releases began to establish the hip hop album as a fixture of the mainstream. Hip hop music became commercially successful, as exemplified by the Beastie Boys ‘ 1986 album Licensed to Ill , which was the first rap album to hit #1 on the Billboard charts.
The release of Spitshine was followed by two hugely successful tours in 2009 and 2010, in which Urthboy performed to sold-out crowds of over 20,000 people. Once again, Urthboy was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize (one of the only artists ever nominated twice). In 2010, Urthboy embarked on his first European tour, playing some of the biggest hip hop festivals in the world (Splash, Germany and Open-Air Festival, Switzerland) as well as clubs shows in Germany with Brother Ali , and his first sold-out headline show in London.

Release Date: 10/22/2012Label: Top Dawg/Aftermath/InterscopeIf you’re one of those people who thinks that today’s hip-hop lacks substance and quality, you obviously aren’t familiar with Kendrick Lamar. It was evident that he was one of rap’s most promising new artists on his album Section.80, but since then, he’s made the case for his talent even stronger with an undeniably sound string of guest appearances, for everyone from Drake to Big Sean. good kid, m.A.A.d city has been previewed to press, but the feedback is overwhelmingly positive. It’s clear that Kendrick’s major label debut isn’t about to disappoint. Hell, even Lady Gaga is a fan of the Compton native. Next: the world.
